There are several pathways to become a permanent resident of Canada.

Permanent Immigration Pathways

Through permanent resident program, Canada facilitates the entry of immigrants to settle in Canada permanently. Canada chooses permanent residents in a way that maximizes their economic, social, and cultural contribution to Canada while protecting the health, safety, and security of Canadians. As a permanent resident, you have the right to get most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage, live, work or study anywhere in Canada, apply for Canadian citizenship, protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. You must pay taxes and respect all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial and municipal levels. Permanent residents are not allowed to vote or run for political office, hold some jobs that need a high-level security clearance.

There are primarily two classes of permanent residence; economic and non-economic.

In economic class, applicants are selected based on their ability to become economically established in Canada. These applicants’ selection criteria are often based on type of occupation (skilled/semi-skilled), English language proficiency, education, work experience, Canadian education or experience, age, ability to establish a business in Canada etc.

Non-economic permanent immigration pathway, applicants are selected based on family-reunification, social, and humanitarian objectives.
